Leaders doing their Wood Badge training is essential but to deliver an adventurous and challenging programme, leaders need a wide set of practical skills.  The Skills Academy has been designed to promote those skills and give leaders the opportunity to develop their expertise.

Courses that the Academy run include:

 


Bushcraft

Bushcraft -Level 1

This is a practical, hands-on course delivered entirely outdoors in an expedition base-camp setting.

Next Course Dates: 2025 tba

The course covers everything you will need to deliver the scout survival skills activity badge, and to run bushcraft camps for your section. It also provides an opportunity to learn bushcraft skills in a safe and supportive environment which will increase your general confidence in the outdoors.

The course involves all participants sleeping out under tarps, preparing fish, and cooking all meals over open fires. Extensive use will be made of knives and each participant will be given a Frost Mora training knife and tarpaulin covered by course fees.

Some of course contents are:

  • Lighting fires using a variety of types of ignition – firesteel, flint and steel, fire by friction using the bowdrill method
  • Using knives safely, knife law, care and sharpening
  • Shelter: Improvising shelters from tarps, making shelters from natural materials
  • Water: Finding and purifying water
  • Wilderness first aid
  • Finding wild food, preparing meat for cooking, cooking over open fires
  • Survival theory, why things go wrong, the mental aspects of survival.

Bushcraft Level 2

Developing the skills from the level 1 course looking at bigger and more adventurous projects to expand your bushcraft skill set.

Date: 19:00 Fri 11th October 2024 – 15:00 Sun 13th October 2024 (2 night stay)

Pioneering

Pioneering

A practical, hands-on, two-day skills workshop open to all adults, in Scouting and Guiding, Managers, Leaders, Adult Supporters, plus Scout Network/Senior Section, (Leaders from non-Scouting/Guiding Youth Organisations are very welcome).

This workshop teaches fundamental and intermediate skills for Pioneering, commencing with Knots and Lashings, progressing onto how rope is made and care of rope, use of pickets, anchors and block’n’tackle.

Safety in Pioneering precedes practicing skills passed over by constructing small, intermediate, and major pioneering projects.

The skills passed over are designed to:

  • ‘Train-the-Trainer’ to teach the Cub Scout, Scout & Explorer Scout Pioneer Activity Badges.
  • provide an introduction to Pioneering suitable for Beaver Scouts via crafts and games.

No previous experience is required. For those wishing to upgrade skills there is plenty on offer – You will be guided by an experienced and enthusiastic team of Pioneers.

  • Please note this course is not the mandatory adult First Response training for adult members

Surrey Scouts supports the development of Tomahawk throwing through two courses:

Course Objectives

The Instructor Course will be a day long course, ending with the newly trained instructors running a two hour experience session

  • How to provide Tomahawk Throwing as an activity for our young people safely and within the bounds of The Scout Association
  • Understand what equipment can and can’t be used
  • How to construct a range
  • Understand throwing techniques and how to correct them
  • Consider session plans, targets, competitions and games

You will need: dress for the weather, hiking boots, waterproofs, layers, gloves, sun cream! – training will be in and out, but experience will be outside the whole time and there will be some waiting.  Bring your own lunch.

We will provide: coffees, teas and biscuits provided

Times: full day of training

The Surrey Scouts Training Trust should be able to take applications for assistance with fees from individuals.  Applications should be made prior to the course start date.  Application forms can be found HERE.

Taster Experience Objectives

  • How to throw Tomahawks safely and successfully
  • 2 hours of instructions and experience.

This is for: people to gain experience.  Novices will learn how to throw Tomahawks and experienced Tomahawks throwers will get to practice their techniques.  Everyone will have the chance to throw up to five different types of tomahawks
