Surrey Scouts: An Armed Forces Community friendly organisation

Surrey Scouts enabling young people from the Armed Forces Community to join Scouting

Surrey Scouts understands the impact service life can have on children and young people in the Armed Forces Community.  We want to accelerate their inclusion in their local community and promote friendships.

We will do our best to enable young people from the Armed Forces Community to join Scouting in Surrey at no disadvantage compared to other young people.

We give priority to those young people from the Armed Forces community, who are already members of Scouting and who transfer to the Surrey area.

Supporting military families

Surrey Scouts is aware that Service members and families have little or no say in where they are posted or for how long.  We know that this can lead to challenges such as having to regularly start new friendships and can create obstacles to spouse employment and outside interests.  It may mean a lack of available family support.  Added to this are spouse and parental absences due to training, deployments and operations.

Surrey Scouts offers a place of stability for military parents and families.  We offer you the opportunity to meet new people, have a chat when you need to and rapidly integrate into your local community.

Supporting service members and veterans

We value your skills whether you’re currently serving, transferring back to civilian life, or a veteran.  We offer flexible volunteering opportunities that fit with your Service commitments.  We actively support our volunteers to enjoy our outdoors and adventurous activities.

Surrey Scouts and the Armed Forces Covenant

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve, or have served, and their families, are treated fairly.

Surrey Scouts signed the Armed Forces Covenant on 29 June 2024 (Armed Forces Day) in the presence of His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Mr Michael More-Molyneux.

Our County Commissioner, Joe Rogerson said, “Surrey Scouts is committed to honouring the Armed Forces Covenant and supporting the Armed Forces Community. We recognise the value Serving Personnel, both Regular and Reservists, Veterans and military families contribute to our country and to Scouting”.

Colonel (Retd) Patrick Crowley MBE DL, Chief Executive of the South East Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (SERFCA) commented, “I am delighted that Surrey Scouts have signed the Armed Forces’ Covenant.  By doing this they have shown their support to Regular and Reserve personnel of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, their families and veterans.  Thank you for this important commitment.”
