Summer Scramble

Between: 22nd July 2024 - 31st August 2024 Location: Sections: Cub Scouts Event Organiser: Steve Valiant

Hello Cubs – happy summer holidays !

This year we are launching the Cub Summer Scramble event for you.

I’m Steve, the County Lead Volunteer for Cubs, and I have a new event for you to try!

There are 12 activities for you to try over the summer holidays, you don’t have to do them all but the more you do the more badges you could earn and the more cub fun you will have!

The activities will all count towards parts of different badges – if you would like to complete the whole badge, you can look the badge up online or in your Cub Scout Badge book for more details on the other elements required to gain your badge.

For each challenge you do, you will need to document it by taking photos and writing about what you have done and put them together into a scrap book – this could be a physical or virtual book. When you have completed your Summer Scramble Scrapbook, write a list of what are your favourite things you do at cubs and what new things you would like to do.

When you return to Cubs after the summer please hand in/email your Scrap Book to your leader so that they can record the parts of the badges you have completed. There is also a special Summer Scramble Badge your leaders can order for you!

Register for Summer SCRAMble

Each Cub needs to be registered individually by an adult.  This means they will be eligible to receive a Summer SCRAMble badge which will be distributed via leaders in the autumn term when the event is finished.  We will not order the badges until the event is over to ensure that we have the correct number of badges.  The badge will be able to be worn on the uniform until 31st December 2024.  There is no cost for participation if you are a member of Surrey Scouts.  If you live outside of Surrey and wish to have a badge, contact the county office (countyoffice@surrey-scouts.org.uk)  after the event and we can send one to you at a cost of £2.

The Challenges – will become visible on 1st July

Challenge 1

Build a fantastic, awe-inspiring, imaginative den. It can be inside your house or in the garden and can be decorated/fortified however you see fit. When you have built your amazing den, take a photo of it for your scrap book, then see if you can sleep in it overnight.  Sweet dreams Cubs!

This will go towards your ‘Our Outdoor Challenge Award part 2’ and give you a ‘Nights Away’ stage.

Challenge 6

Take a camera with you on a big day out with friends or family, wear your scarf with pride and take 10 selfies of you wearing your scarf in different interesting and unique places. Up a tower, under a bridge, on a roller coaster, in the sea – could be anywhere!

This will go towards your ‘Photographer Activity Badge’

Challenge 7

Let’s see those green fingers – what can you grow over the summer? You could plant some flowers, grow some vegetables, or tend to a shrub.  How successful a gardener are you? Will you be able to eat what you have grown?

This will go towards your ‘Gardener Activity Badge”.

Challenge 8

What can you do with a group of friends or your family to raise money for, or help a charity? Could you donate some clothes to a charity shop, could you collect some food for the food bank, run a marathon? How can you help others over the summer.

This will go towards your ‘Our World Challenge Award part 2’.

Challenge 9

Time to get muddy outside!  Using mud create a nature face out of mud, sticks, grass, leaves etc. Can you make it look like anyone in particular? Will it have a name, or a special magical power?  Remember to take a photo to document it in your Scramble Scrap Book.

This will go towards your ‘Artist Activity Badge’

Challenge 10

Plant a tree, let’s see how many we can plant over the summer around Surrey. Look in your garden you might have a sapling growing in the wrong place that you could replant.

This will go towards your ‘Environmental Conservation Activity Badge’

Challenge 11

Get out there with the litter picker and a bag to take part in a litter pick with some friends and see how many bin bags you can fill. Where did you go to find the most litter? What was the weirdest thing you found? Document it all in your Summer Scramble Scrap Book.

This will go towards your ‘Environmental Conservation Activity Badge’

Challenge 12

Get the maps out so that you can plan and take your adults on a hike that lasts at least 2 hours. Where will you go and what will you find? Did you manage to follow the route you planned?

This will go towards your ‘Our Adventure Challenge Award part 3’, and will count as a ‘Hikes Away’ stage and towards your ‘Navigator Staged Activity Badge level 2’

Bonus Challenge!

Design your own Summer SCRAMbled Egg recipe!  Start with the usual recipe and make some summery additions – will it be the tastiest thing you eat this summer or something truly horrible?

What will you add?  Summer fruits? Food you usually have on a summer picnic?  Some Marmite?  The choice is yours.  What surprising taste combinations will you discover?

This is just for fun and is not badge related.
