Learning for your role in Scouting

The Wood Badge is available for all adult volunteers who would like to improve their skills and knowledge.  It is awarded in recognition of your personal commitment to learning and development with Scouts and is an Internationally recognised Scouting Development award. Following assessment, you will be entitled to wear the coveted Wood Beads and become a member of 1st Gilwell Park Scout Group.

Managers' Training

Managers’ Training

The Manager’s Wood Badge Programme includes a number of skills required for managing people effectively including skills of Time Management, Planning, Developing others, Influencing and Negotiation.  Surrey offers a number of online support workshops that enhances and develops some of these critical skills. Each of these workshops also supports an individual through the validation of the Managers Wood Badge.

Next Surrey events:

  • Skills for Managing Time Effectively: Primarily designed for Lead Volunteers and Team Leads, this workshop is useful for anyone who finds they don’t have enough time to do what they want to do. Dates TBA
  • Guide to planning for Groups or District Teams: This workshop helps you build a plan for your team on the foundations of others. 2nd October 2025
  • How to Influence Others: This workshop describes an influence strategy with ideas for applying it within your team. 9th October 2025
  • Getting the Best out of Diverse Teams: This workshop concentrates on the different personalities you are likely to find in your team and the strategies for different ways of getting the best out of people. 16th October 2025

All Lead Volunteers (including Youth Leads) and District Team Leads are expected to complete Leading Volunteers in the Growing Roots section of MyLearning (The Learning some people need).

All new Group Lead Volunteers are recommended to attend the 5 webinars in the GLV Induction Programme available at www.scouts.org.uk (search GLV Induction)  GLVs are also recommended to complete Leading on Safety within My Learning

All Youth Leads need to read the responsibilities of Youth Leads and attend some national webinars,  Search Youth Leads in www.scouts.uk.org

All Teams Leads (Programme, Support or Volunteer Development) are encouraged to read the
Section of Scouts.org.uk that describes the responsibilities of their team and the section on Tools to Support Leadership Teams.

Nights Away

Looking to apply for a Nights Away Permit?

This course delivers the skills needed to help you achieve your Nights Away Permit and for anyone else who wishes to increase their knowledge
The course consists of a series of 6 online sessions leading to one practical residential weekend course

Module 38 – Residential Weekends (you only need to complete one of these plus the relevant catering session plus one of each of the Zoom sessions):

Additional Camping Skills Workshops – 2-3 hour sessions for those wishing to learn new skills and increase their knowledge.
Mix and Match – book some or all:  Book here please

  • Saturday 18th October a.m.- Tarps, Tents and Shelters – Looking at a variety of tents and shelters
  • Saturday 18th October p.m. – Camp Gadgets – simple gadgets to use at camp
  • Sunday 19th October a.m. – Backwoods Cooking – cooking backwoods style on wood fires
  • Sunday 19th October p.m. –  Knife, Axe and Saw – safe use of knives, axes and saws at camp

 

Module 16 – Introduction to Residential Experiences 
This 2 1/2  hour workshop covers the requirements for adults who need  this Module as part of their Wood Badge. (It is not intended for anyone applying for a Nights Away Permit)

Camp Fire Leaders' Training

Campfire Leadership

A course designed for all folk interested in running and helping at campfires.

What does the course include:

  • How to build a good fire and some interesting techniques.
  • How to prepare and produce a Campfire programme
  • How to run the Campfire and teach songs
  • The Safety aspects
  • Campfire blankets and wear
  • All about Stunts, Yells, Claps and Thanks
  • Including the Faith part of programme in a Campfire
  • And yes, Singing (We can’t either, so what the heck!!)

We will start the course at a local Scout HQ.  Later in the day we will join the Nights Away course at Bentley Copse for dinner and then run the evening campfire for them to put into practice all you have learned.

The cost for this course is £25.00 and is open to all adult volunteers, helpers, Guiding volunteers

Assessing Learning in the Digital Platform

Skills for Permit & Learning Assessors

There are three accreditations that require the holders to assess the skills of others and give them supportive and objective feedback.

  • Nights Away Permit Assessors, awarded at District level.
  • Activity Permit Assessors, awarded at County level
  • Learning Assessors, awarded at both County and District  level.

A one hour workshop is available covering the skills of:

  • Giving supportive and objective feedback to adults
  • Demonstrating consideration and care for those you are giving feedback to
  • Using adult style language and avoiding patronising speech.
  • Demonstrating active listening

Additional learning is needed for NA Permit assessment and Activity Permit assessment. This additional learning is assessed by nominated District or County Team Members.  The details of what you need to know are available when you enrol in either Module 25N or Module 25A.  Further guidance will be available on the workshop

Additional training is available for Learning Assessors in the use of My Learning for assessment and for assessing Wood Badge Modules.
