1st Weybridge (Brooklands Own)
At 1st Weybridge we are excited to be a part of Scouting! Our purpose is to deliver #SkillsForLife to as many young people as possible, enhancing the lives of young people and adult volunteers alike and equipping them to making the world a better place. As a part of a worldwide movement, we are a part of the largest global youth movement.
We meet on a regular basis in term time and follow a carefully planned programme that offers a range of skill development from outdoor activities to more creative approaches as well as developing experiences in teamwork and leadership – there is something for everybody in Scouting!
Scouting is for everyone of whatever gender, background or beliefs – no one is excluded and we delight in diversity! We are guided by our core values of respect for each other, respect for ourselves and respect for our world.
Established in 1907 when six boys studied Lord Baden-Powell’s book “Aids to Scouting” and approached the leader of their local boys’ club (Mr Hugh Locke King, the man responsible for the creation of Brooklands) for guidance on forming a Scout group. These six boys were the nucleus of the first Scout Troop in Weybridge, one of the earliest registered Scout groups in the country. During an air display at Brooklands that same year, a French pilot abandoned his take-off and ended up in the river Wey. A group of 1st Weybridge Scouts was on hand and the boys jumped into the river to rescue the pilot from the stricken aircraft. In recognition of their actions, Brooklands bestowed the group with perpetual free entry to the track. Today, the main focus of our Group is the delivery of fun, safe and rewarding programmes of activities for children in all three sections. The purpose of this is to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.
