Surrey Scouts in Brookwood Last Post Ceremony

Date: 12th Nov 2017 Author: Scout Websites

Sunday 5th November saw members from all Sections across Woking District, along with the 1st Claygate Scout & Guide Band, parade in this month’s ceremony of the Brookwood Last Post Association at the Brookwood Military Cemetery near Woking.

The Brookwood ceremony originates from when the daily Last Post Association remembrance ceremony held under the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium, was banned during the Second World War and transferred to England.

During Sunday’s ceremony a Scout, Marc Noble, was remembered. Marc was 10 years old when he attended the first ever Scout camp by Baden-Powell on Brownsea Island in 1907. Marc become a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery and died of wounds received near Ypres in 1917. He was just 20 years of age.

The ceremony was a proud moment to see so many Young People taking time out of their busy lives in not just an act of remembrance, but also to help keep alive a unique part of this country’s history.

In keeping with supporting this event 100 Woking Scouts will be making a weekend expedition to Ypres in November 2018 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.
