Sun, Wind and Storms – a fun week for Woking Explorer Scouts!

Date: 2nd Aug 2017 Author: Scout Websites

Over 30 Explorer scouts and their leaders from the 5 Units in Woking sailed across the Solent and made camp in the northerly part of the Isle of Wight at Corf Scout Activity Centre near Yarmouth for their annual summer camp.

The Explorers took part in numerous activities including building rafts and racing them on NewtonRiver; Coasteering and kayak surfing in Freshwater Bay on a wet and very windy day and Mega Supping on large Paddle boards holding 10 people at a time on Sandown Bay in lovely sunshine.

Other activities during the week included archery and organising games whilst at camp, running their own campfires, and walking the coastal footpaths.

In teams of 6, the Explorers spent a day completing a monopoly run using buses to visit famous land marks on the island including places such as Carisbrooke castle, Osbourne House and Alum Bay.

They also spent an afternoon on Brook Bay fossil hunting where they found signs of the Petrified Forrest and numerous rock formations of dinosaur feet. On another day, they took the opportunity to visit The Owl and Monkey Haven in Newport and on one of the wettest days of the week, went ten pin bowling in Ryde.

It was a great way to end the hectic term of exams which allowed the Explorers to relax and enjoy new and different activities as well as chilling out during the week.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
