World Youth Day – Krakow 2016

On the 23rd of June 2016 myself and Chris Corish, both leaders in 5th Caterham Scout Group, headed off to Krakow, Poland to attend the World Youth Day celebrations for 2016.

It was an amazing experience going to World Youth Day with 1.6 million other pilgrims to see the Pope and to celebrate mass together on Sunday 31st.

Whilst we were there Pope Francis invited young Catholics to live fearlessly, which we did whole heartedly in joining the queue for food with 1.6 million people! Queuing over 3 hours for food that ran out once we were nearly at the end, luckily we’re English so we could deal with the queuing.

On the Sunday there was mass with the Pope in a big field just outside of Krakow. Sadly because of the huge amount of people, all of the public transport was shut down. Meaning to get there we had to walk 17 kilometres. As Leaders this was easy! Just like a big hike for us and of course being leaders meant that we were ready for the 30 degree heat on the hike there and the sudden downpour of rain on the way back to our hotel.

Overall, World Youth Day was a great experience meeting thousands of people from all over the world. Zimbabweans to Cambodians, Americans to Belarusians, from brits to Pakistanis, from the Irish to the Chinese! Also a surprising amount of French and Spanish explorer scouts!
