More information

Join in with these expeditions if you and your Explorers or Network want to develop your expedition skills and complete any of your Chief Scout’s Diamond / Silver DofE or Queen’s Scouts Award / Gold DofE expeditions.

You can join in as a complete expedition team of from four to seven Explorer Scouts or Network Scouts from your Unit, District or Network.

Or you can join one of our expeditions as part of an Open team, joining in with Explorer Scouts or Network Scouts from across Surrey.

A key aim of our expeditions is to enable Leaders to develop their knowledge and skills in expedition delivery, supervision and assessment.  Please let us know if you would like to join our Expedition Leader programme.

In line with our key aim, we expect a Leader or adult volunteer from the Unit, District or Network will join in to support their Explorer Scouts or Network Scouts as they carry out their expedition training and their actual expeditions.

There are typically opportunities for Silver Practice and Qualifying and for Gold Practice and Qualifying in April, August and October.  The exception is that, due to the length of day light and expected weather, there is usually no Gold Qualifying opportunity in October.  Silver expeditions and Gold Practices are four days long.  Gold

Qualifying is five days long.  In each case Day 1 is a Training and Acclimatisation day.  Days 2 to 4 or 5 are Practice or Qualifying expedition days.

In advance of each expedition, you will need to take part in expedition training, either by zoom or in person, and carry out the necessary expedition planning.

Our expeditions are delivered by the Western Watch SASU, which is part of Surrey Scouts.

The Western Watch SASU provides Surrey Scouts with the opportunity to carry out expeditions in UK wild country three times a year.

The Western Watch SASU enables Explorers Scouts, Network Scouts, Leaders and adult volunteers to to develop their expedition knowledge and skills to enable them by taking part in expeditions and to develop their knowledge and skills in expedition delivery, supervision and assessment.
