1st St John’s, Woking went to Pinewood Scout Camp in Croydon for the first time this year. It was their annual Group Camp which this year had a record number of Beavers, Cubs & Scouts: 55 in total. The Cubs & Scouts were put in 6 mixed age teams with the older Scouts as team leaders.
The carousel of activities on offer this year were Team Building Games, Backwoods cooking (smoking mackerel & cooking prawn stew in the Dutch oven, rope bridge pioneering, bush craft skills, orienteering and archery (another first for the group).
The Beavers cooked blackberry muffins in an oven made of a tinfoil covered box; enjoyed walking along the slack line; went looking/listening for bats on the Saturday evening (before the group campfire) and they lay sand at the mouth of a badger set in an attempt to gather paw prints (which they did very successfully) to name but a few of their activities.
The menu was a great success this year: cooked breakfast both mornings, burgers, chips & corn-on-the-cob for lunch on Saturday; chicken curry, naan, rice & poppadums for Saturday evening & then chicken fajitas for lunch on Sunday.
This year the Scouts could choose whether they slept in a self-built shelter or a hammock (not sure how comfy they were?), Cubs had the luxury of a tent & the Beavers were spoilt with the warmth of a side room off the main hall.
All in all, a great camp with lots of #SkillsForLife
