Scouts across the County celebrate St Georges Day

Caterham District Scouts St George's Day Parade

As in many other Districts across the county, Caterham District Scouts celebrated St Georges Day with an annual parade and a Scouts own service.  The address was given by the Bishop of Croydon, Nicholas Baines, which was very well received as he started talking about football.  Over 400 members of local Scout Groups paraded through Caterham Valley to St Johns Church for the service.

During the service Richard Shortman the County Commissioner presented Andy Parr with a medal of Merit for outstanding service to Caterham Scouts and many other local organisations.

Afterwards the Scouts marched to Timber Hill recreation ground where the salute was taken by Cllr Steve Altria, chairman of Tandridge District Council.  The parade was led by members of Warlingham Scout Guild Band and the corps of drums society.

Before leaving, a photo was taken of all those present, as a memento to celebrate 100 years of Scouting in the Caterham District.

There are now over 700 members in the Caterham area, and numbers are still rising.  (Nationally the number of members grew 3.7% but in Caterham we rose by a massive 18%)

On the 23rd April all Schools in the Caterham and Warlingham area are allowing the children to wear their uniforms to school for the day to help celebrate St Georges Day. As well as Patron Saint of England, St George is also the Patron Site of Scouting.
