Woking Scouts celebrated their 21st Handicamp over the weekend of 14th and 15th September at Woodlarks Campsite in Farnham. Scouts from the borough were buddied with pupils from Freemantles, Carwarden, Walton Leigh and The Park Schools, for a sunny and warm weekend of fun and adventure.
They enjoyed typical Scouting activities such as climbing and abseiling, backwoods cooking, canoeing, shooting, archery and building and racing model boats. To celebrate the twenty first camp, they also enjoyed an evening of magic puppetry and song from the amazing Mr McDougnut. A weekend of Fun Friendship and Integration, that was the aim of over 140 Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Leaders, Teachers and Helpers.
The camp, is sponsored by the Chobham-based Children with Special Needs Foundation. Handicamp also received donations from Waitrose, Surrey Army Cadet Force and the Co op. The massive three face climbing wall was constructed by Scaffolding Great Britain and the holds were supplied by Craggy Island in Guildford.
The Mayor Cllr Brian Cross visited the camp and enjoyed a pleasant sunny morning chatting to the young people and taking part in some of the activities including climbing the wall with his wife Helen. The weekend enabled all the young people, leaders and teachers to integrate, learn from each other and enjoy a fun packed and memorable weekend.
At the closing ceremony, conducted by Surrey Scouts Chaplin Fr Jonathan How, the Scouts and children were encouraged to carry out the world Jamboree’s motto, one world one promise and to help make the world a better place by making friends and being happy.
The Thanks Badge was presented to Linda Brain from St Johns who has assisted at Handicamp for the last 20 years.
