This Activities Guide is intended to provide basic information on the wide range of events, facilities and courses that are provided for Surrey Scouts by Surrey Scouts and others. It is aimed at young people, from scout age upwards, (although some activities can be adapted for the younger sections) and leaders. There are contacts and advisers for each activity so do have a go at some of the county events. The activities guide is reproduced here on the County Website as well as being made available for download from the Document Library at the bottom of this page.
2007 will be a momentous year for us all and many of the regular events will be offered as well as the special centenary special events. The activities diary is a draft list of activity events planned and notified to date. Many events will be fixed after this has gone to press, e.g. flying, and some may be subject to change, so do check.
The activity clubs within Surrey Scouts are constituted to enable members of the Scout movement to enjoy specific activities in safety with appropriate supervision, viz., air activities, caving, mountaineering, radio, shooting, water activities. These clubs organise a variety of events and meetings, from open evening meetings and “taster days”, to more advanced Club events & instruction.
Key factsheets and assessment checklists are included for most activities, but a complete list of factsheets, and other resource materials, is available from the Scoutbase Website or the Information Centre at Gilwell. Tel: 0845 300 1818, Fax: 020 8433 7103 (open 8.00am to 8.00pm, Mon to Fri & 9.00am to noon, Sat.) Email: info.centre@scout.org.uk.
The adventurous activities permit scheme was introduced into Surrey in April 2006 for leaders and young people who want to obtain permits to take young people on such activities as caving, hill walking, climbing & abseiling and water activities. The scheme is fully described in factsheets FS120100 , FS120101, FS120102, FS120103 and FS120104. This simplified scheme requires candidates to submit a brief application form to an assessor who will assess technical skills taking into account any National Governing Body award and then send it to the DC who will check the suitability of the candidates and issue the permit tailored to the level that matches skills, knowledge and experience. Applications for permits to lead Scout parties should be made on the Application for an Adventurous Activity Permit form, available from the Scoutbase Website or from The Scout Information Centre at Gilwell Park.
The Guide also provides some introductory advice about how to offer adventurous activities to young people is available, and there are also lists of providers of activities external to Scouting and of national governing bodies for many sports. Leaders should remember that they are responsible for checking the suitability of external experts who may instruct and lead young people.
